What can you use the app for?

Igloo is an enterprise social collaboration software that enables team collaboration and communication from a single platform. By using one app for file sharing, blogging, scheduling meetings and sharing updates, Igloo removes the need for employing multiple, disconnected applications. Igloo is built around seven core “apps”: blogs, calendars, file sharing, forums, microblogs, tasks and wikis.

Igloo lets you create an internal company blog to share news, updates and reports. Blogs support comments, @mentions, following, links, rating, and co-authored blog posts. The app also facilitates microblogging through a live activity feed from which you can ask questions, publish status updates, share links, comment, and attach inline images and files. Further discussions can be carried out by setting a forum in Igloo where you can discuss and vote on ideas, rate posts and resolve issues.

Igloo helps project teams work together with task management features that let you set task priorities, create subtasks, track action-items and create personal to-do lists. Igloo contains a built-in document management system which facilitates in-company and external file sharing. The app supports previewing, version control, update notifications, and media management. Shared calendars in Igloo let you create events and get reminders, while setting up wikis in Igloo lets you document and share processes.

Igloo was created out of the Centre for International Governance Innovation in Waterloo, Ontario. The app has been listed in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Social Software in the Workplace for 6 years running, among other awards. What are the differences to other apps?

Within Igloo’s seven core apps lie a number of feature and capabilities that make the platform a flexible and versatile solution. Igloo lets you create public and private spaces to organize activity by project, department or task force. Familiar social networking features let you rate, comment, and follow any type of content, from people to pages.

Personal profiles let you find and connect with employees through a company-wide directory. Gamification features such as points and badges reward the most active users. Igloo also features social analytics tools to track user activity, along with your own unique URL and branding, multilingual support, and tight security and permissions.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

Igloo uses a simple, clean and modern green and white interface. The main navigational header gives access to the company-wide library, events, chatter, galleries, discussions, departments, projects, wikis and staff.

By clicking on the project tab you can access all specific project-related content through a navigational header that gives access to: dashboard, blog, chatter, wiki, documents, calendar and discussions.

Igloo is built on a widget-based system that lets you deploy only the apps that you need in your workspace using drag-and-drop. You can customize the interface using custom themes, styles and Global CSS.

Igloo offers a personal dashboard to follow and display only the content most relevant to you. The dashboard gives an overview of all the content you are following, such as documents, wikis, blogs and tasks. You can also see your personal calendar, a list of your contacts, their status and what they’re working on.

How does the registration process work?

You can try Igloo for free by clicking on the green “Try it for free” button on the top right-hand side of the page. This leads to a page requesting your email address to sign up for the free version. The free version allows for 10 users, 3 team spaces and 10 GB of storage and is free forever. You can upgrade any time you like.

What does it cost to use the application?

Igloo offers a free forever version that caters to 10 users, 3 team spaces and 10GB of storage. The paid plans require an annual contract and cost $3 per user per month when deployed as an extranet (for customers) and $12 per user per month when used as an intranet (for staff). Igloo offers discounted pricing for academic and non-profit customers.

Who would you recommend the application to?

Due to its pricing and scalability, Igloo serves the needs of both large, enterprise organizations as well as small to medium-sized companies. With the ability to create team workspaces, Igloo is ideal for collaboration on specific projects or among specific team members or departments.

Igloo is a flexible solution that can be deployed as an in-company intranet for employee use only or an external extranet for customer collaboration.
